Anatomy of the Hip

Your hip joint connects your legs to your torso. It is a ball-and-socket joint formed by two main bones: the thigh bone (femur) and the hip bone (pelvis). This structure allows smooth movement of your upper leg and supports the weight of your body during standing, walking, and other activities. The hip is surrounded by muscles, ligaments, and cartilage, all working together to ensure stability and mobility.

Why Does Hip Pain Happen?

Hip pain can result from several causes, ranging from mild to severe.

  • Mild pain can occur at any age, often after physical activity or overuse of muscles or tendons
  • Long-term pain is more common in middle-aged and older adults due to wear and tear, injuries, or damage to cartilage and tissues in the joint

Avascular Necrosis (AVN): The Most Frequent Cause for Hip Pain in India

Avascular necrosis or AVN is the death of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply. Also called osteonecrosis, it can lead to tiny breaks in the bone and cause the bone to collapse. Anyone can be affected but the condition is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50. If osteonecrosis has advanced to the point where the femoral head has already collapsed, the most successful treatment is total hip replacement.

Osteoarthritis: A Common Cause of Hip Pain

Especially if you are over 50, osteoarthritis may be the cause of your hip pain. It happens when the cartilage cushioning the bones in your joint wears out, leading to painful "bone-on-bone" contact. Symptoms often include stiffness and pain in the front of your hip, groin, or thigh. Causes can include:

  • Genetics
  • Aging
  • Injuries
  • Lifestyle factors

Is it time to see a doctor?

For mild hip pain, you may manage it at home with rest, pain relievers, and some changes to your activity level. However, you should see a doctor if:

  • The pain worsens or does not improve with home care
  • You experience pain when walking, standing, or putting weight on your hip
  • You have sudden, sharp pain after a fall or injury

A doctor can assess your condition with simple tests like X-rays or a physical exam to find the right solution for you. They can determine whether your symptoms are caused by conditions like fractures, arthritis, or other issues.
